Big Creative Academy hosted a performance event for National Poetry Day on Thursday 28 September. National Poetry Day is a campaign organised by the Arts Council UK celebrating poetry throughout the country.
Our students were lucky to have the opportunity to work with a professional poet, Raph Blake, and one of our governors, Lawrence Lartey, to create original poems on the theme of freedom. Students performed their poems over one lunch time to showcase the new poetry writing skills that they had learned. Raph Blake even performed his very own spoken word piece on Freedom.
Principal Sacha Corcoran MBE says:
“Big Creative Academy sees National Poetry Day as a chance for our students to have their voices heard. Working alongside our governor Lawrence Lartey and industry professionals we want to show that the theme of freedom is applicable to and resonates with many of our students. By incorporating National Poetry Day into our English curriculum we are enabling the students to use their experiences, be creative and link their learning to a form of expression.”
Students found the workshops motivating. One learner commented, “I loved the workshop and Raph’s performance inspired me. He’s very talented and the way he uses words is so clever. Studying poetry has really helped me with my music.”
